As expected, the Chicago Bears will be without two starters and one of their top cornerbacks when they take the field to face the Detroit Lions on Sunday.
Inside linebacker Danny Trevathan will miss his second straight game with a calf injury that sprung up during the team’s Week 8 loss to the New Orleans Saints. Trevathan played through the injury, which worsened after the game ended. The Bears’ top linebacker hasn’t practiced since the loss, but has been listed as questionable prior to each of the last two games. Chicago’s defense has allowed 319 rushing yards in the two games Trevathan has missed in 2017.
Also out of action is tight end Dion Sims, who also hasn’t been available for practice since the team returned from the bye week. Sims has missed practice with an illness that Head Coach John Fox said he can’t discuss for legal reasons that may or may not exist. According to Sims’ agent, the illness isn’t serious and expects him to be back soon. With Sims and Zach Miller out of action, the Bears deployed a starting lineup with rookie Adam Shaheen starting at tight end alongside two wide receivers. Shaheen caught passes on each of the Bears’ first two drives, but was out-snapped by Daniel Brown 38-31.
The loss of Bryce Callahan as the team’s top slot corner could be something that shift the scales further in favor of the Lions. The Bears will go to battle against Golden Tate without their second-highest-graded cornerback, according to Pro Football Focus’ grading standards. Tate lines up in the slot on 81 percent of his snaps, while Callahan is the man in that spot 98 percent of the time.
