Re-Live All of Mitch Trubisky’s Glorious Touchdowns from His Rookie Year and Other Bullets

Who do we need to contact to make “Trusday” an official holiday?

While we gather up some information, let’s celebrate this day by watching each of Mitch Trubisky’s touchdowns from his rookie season and dream about the many more to come:

  • Over at Da Bears Blog, Jeff Hughes’ notes on the Bears’ coaching staff opens a window into Matt Nagy’s new assistants. The staff is representative of the Bears’ overall direction – young and hungry with the hope of being progressive. Wide Receivers Coach Mike Furrey and Tight Ends Coach Kevin M. Gilbride (his dad was a former Chargers head coach and Super Bowl winning offensive coordinator for the New York Giants) are among those with fresh eyes, a new perspective, and a different coaching style compared to the previous era. We don’t know the kind of impact these coaches will have, but a different look can’t hurt and could help.
  • The Bears aren’t the only team putting together an impressive coaching staff. Check out what Jon Gruden and the Oakland Raiders are doing with their staff, which includes ex-Bears TEs Coach Frank Smith. FanRag’s Jordy McElroy compares the Bears and Raiders’ new staffs and asks which is more impressive? Where the Bears have upside and hope among their coaches, the Raiders have experience and NFL know-how – the group Gruden has put together is pretty impressive. Oakland’s new coaches include new coordinators on both sides of the ball with Greg Olson (who just worked with Jared Goff/Sean McVay) leading the offense and former Bengals DC Paul Guenther in that same role. The Raiders probably have an edge here, but they should, given they just gave their head coach $100 million. It would be an unwise investment to give that to the coach and skimp out on his assistants.
  • Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune goes through the many ties the Bears have to the AFC and NFC Championship games. We’ll try not to dwell on Alshon Jeffery’s departure much more than we already have because it still stings thinking about what could have been with Jeffery on the receiving end of a Mitch Trubisky deep ball. But there are others the Bears miss, such as Eagles Vice President of Player Personnel Joe Douglas. Long-time NFL insider Peter King believes Douglas is on the cusp of being a candidate to run his own team. Douglas was a Baltimore Ravens national scout before being poached by GM Ryan Pace to become the Bears’ Director of College Scouting in 2015.
  • And look who’s coming back to recap the action of Championship Sunday:
  • At this time last week, the Pittsburgh Steelers were focusing on playing the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship Game. That’s probably why they’re sitting at home after losing to the Jacksonville Jaguars in the divisional round. Pittsburgh’s elimination means the offseason is under way, which will surely push any and every Martavis Bryant trade rumor back into the limelight. BearsWire’s Bryan Perez believes the Bears should target Bryant as a potential trade solution to their wide receiver problem. Bryant’s on-again, off-again trips to the trading block made him a hot topic of discussion on the rumor mill prior to the Steelers retaining their No. 2 receiver. Bryant has one year left on his contract and his off-the-field issues are duly noted, but he would be a clear upgrade at the position.
  • Tarik Cohen looked like the Bears’ best receiver often during his rookie season. Unfortunately, it says something about the team’s wideouts when a running back is the squad’s most prolific pass-catcher. Cohen’s rookie year performance pushed him into possibly being considered a core piece moving forward. ESPN’s NFC North’s writers rewarded Cohen’s efforts by naming him the division’s Rookie of the Year award winner, which has him feeling some type of way:

  • Where quarterbacks land in free agency could impact what happens in the draft, according to SB Nation’s Dan Kadar. So while the Bears aren’t impacted by the quarterback position directly, the more quarterbacks who come off the board ahead of them will leave some top natch talent on the board that otherwise wouldn’t be there. Earlier, we looked at Matt Miller’s most recent mock draft that sent the draft’s top lineman, Texas offensive tackle Connor Williams, to the Bears with the eighth pick. Kadar goes in a different direction, mocking talented Alabama receiver Calvin Ridley to the Bears. Despite Kadar seeing edge defender as a bigger need, he can see where the Bears follow the safe pick of Ridley with a second-round selection of Georgia’s Lorenzo Carter.
  • The first of many college prospect showcase games kicks off Saturday with the East-West Shrine Game. You can take a look at the rosters here. We’ll dive into the Shrine Game more as the week, but browsing through last year’s roster reveals some familiar names such as Lions receiver Kenny Golladay, Ravens offensive lineman/Bears UDFA signing Dieugot Joseph, and Saints receiver Austin Carr. Which sleepers will find their way onto NFL rosters next year remains to be seen, but someone will surely get their start at this game. And seeing that Matt Nagy’s staff is mostly in order heading into this weekend should give the Bears a slight edge over some other teams who aren’t as fortunate.
