Former Bears HC Candidate Darrell Bevell Now Linked to Bears’ QB Coach Job

While Matt Nagy moved quickly to fill the top coordinator jobs on the coaching staff, the Chicago Bears remain in the hunt for a new quarterbacks coach – Yes, even though Dave Ragone is still employed in that capacity ….

Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune reports Darrell Bevell could be in play to join the mix of candidates which also includes Pat O’Hara (who reportedly interviewed for the position on Tuesday) and Todd Downing (who popped up on the rumor mill on Tuesday night).

Bevell has 12 years of experience as an offensive coordinator, including a seven-year stint with the Seahawks from 2011 to 2017. Seattle fired Bevell and others on the offensive coaching staff as the team searches for a new direction. The Seahawks finished 11th in points scored and posted a top-10 scoring offense in four of the seven seasons in which he was the team’s offensive coordinator.

Before joining the Seahawks, Bevell was the Vikings’ offensive coordinator for five years (2006-10) and the Packers’ quarterbacks coach (2003-05) for a three-year span in which he worked in some capacity with Green Bay’s offense.

Brad Childress was the head coach during Bevell’s time as Minnesota’s offensive coordinator. Childress has worked in a variety of roles for the Kansas City Chiefs since 2013 (Spread Game Analyst from 2013-15, Offensive Coordinator in 2016, Assistant Head Coach in 2017) where he was something of a mentor for new Bears coach Matt Nagy. It’s not outside the realm of possibility that Bevell would come highly recommended to Nagy by Childress.

This isn’t the first time Bevell has been linked to a coaching position with the Bears. Back in 2013, the team requested permission to interview Bevell for their head-coaching gig, but obviously a lot of on-field and front office personnel have changed since then.
