It appears that an offense which will undergo change under new Head Coach Matt Nagy and Offensive Coordinator Mark Helfrich will maintain some continuity with the expected return of Quarterbacks Coach Dave Ragone.
Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune tweets the Bears are now expected to retain Ragone as the team’s quarterbacks coach for a third season. If that happens to be the case, then Ragone will be the only offensive coach to return from John Fox’s staff. So while the Bears drove home the point of staying the course on defense with the return of Vic Fangio, it appears as if Mitch Trubisky will get that kind of stability by having the same position coach for back-to-back seasons, too.
The Bears reportedly interviewed Texans offensive assistant Pat O’Hara earlier in the week and were rumored to be interested in former Raiders Offensive Coordinator Todd Downing for the position. Even one-time head coaching candidate Darrell Bevell popped up as a rumored darkhorse candidate. Alas, it appears as if Ragone will stick around for another year.
Ragone joined the Bears in 2016 as QBs Coach, taking over for Dowell Loggains when he was promoted after Offensive Coordinator Adam Gase left to take the Miami Dolphins head coaching gig. This will be Ragone’s seventh year as an assistant coach in the NFL. He was a Wide Receivers Coach (2011-12) and Quarterbacks Coach (2013) for the Tennessee Titans, and an Offensive Quality Control Coach (2015) for the Washington Redskins.
Ragone is probably best known for his time as the Louisville Cardinals’ quarterback, where he was a three-time Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year and three-time All-American honorable mention.
