Mitch Trubisky is So Excited About Next Season, He’s Already Dragging Teammates to Join Him for Workouts in California

Mitch Trubisky’s first public comments since the Chicago Bears hired Matt Nagy to replace John Fox produced feelings of excitement, optimism, and hope – you know, feelings we were incapable of emoting towards the end of Fox’s run in Chicago.

“It is a very exciting time. I really can’t explain it much more than that,” Trubisky said in an appearance on Bears All Access on Tuesday night. “I think this offense is going to fit perfect for the pieces we have. The guys we got coming in, the coaches are very creative and they’re going to do whatever it takes to put us in the best position to win and put up a lot of points.”

An overtly optimistic Trubisky gushed about what is on the horizon with a new-look offense led by Nagy and his new staff of assistants. Trubisky discussed their connection, which began during the pre-draft process when Nagy – then the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator – met with the then quarterback prospect. Trubisky raved about the coaching staff, predicting they’ll be “great teachers” for an offense he believes fits his strengths and will allow for more explosive plays.

If you follow Trubisky on Instagram, it’s hard not to be optimistic, too. Sure, he has shared plenty of photos of California sunsets and delicious steak dinners. But he’s also got images of workouts and players who have already joined him. Trubisky talked about the difference between what he was doing this time last year post-NFL Scouting Combine and now as a player entering his second NFL season. With a year under his belt, Trubisky said he found himself working on more specific things to improve his game and make him more efficient as a thrower. He explored the ideas of becoming more balanced and durable and taking care of his body as part of the process that comes before he can dive into his new playbook and learn the ins-and-outs.

“I’ve got to let my teammates know I’m on top of everything,” Trubisky said.

Trubisky even discussed how he was picking the brain of roommate Jared Goff, whose second-year leap with the Los Angeles Rams he hopes to duplicate in Chicago. I suppose nice backdrop with a good roommate can do a lot for a guy’s confidence.

The second-year quarterback (that will take some time getting used to) also name-dropped offensive linemen Kyle Long and Cody Whitehair, as well as practice squad wide receivers Nelson Spruce and DeMarcus Ayers as players who have visited him in California during the offseason. Trubisky also confirmed wide receiver Kevin White was working out with him and expressed faith in what he’ll bring to the offense. And if those two former first-round picks can build a connection (and White can stay healthy enough to produce on Sundays) then the Bears offense might have something cooking moving forward.

Alas, hope springs eternal for Trubisky, whose excitement you can feel through the airwaves.

“I can tell you there is no one more excited than me. I hope you guys can tell by how it is in my voice. I’m just really pumped,” Trubisky said. “I didn’t think I was going to come on and talk this much, but you guys got me juiced. I miss my people and I’m ready to get back to work.”

Same here, Mitch.
