While there’ll be considerable interest in how the Chicago Bears address their vacancies at wide receiver, let’s not lose sight of Kyle Fuller’s situation.
The Bears pinned the transition tag on the 26-year-old cornerback before the 3 p.m. deadline on March 6, ensuring Fuller would either play one year with the Bears while on the tag (2018) or give the team a chance to match any contract offered by another franchise. And judging by one report, Fuller might have several suitors in addition to the Bears.
Jason La Canfora (CBS Sports) says he’s spoken with multiple NFL front office executives who believe Fuller could be given multiple offer sheets. Mind you, Fuller can only sign one, and the Bears have sufficient cap space to match whatever is written on the page, so to speak. Ultimately, that’s the kind of thing that could stop several teams from going too far down the road with fuller.
Then again, La Canfora lists the Packers, Titans, Buccaneers, and Texans as teams that are doing their homework as they prepare to attack the cornerback market. La Canfora believes one of that group of teams is likely to sign Rams free agent corner Trumaine Johnson, which means one less landing spot for Fuller. However, it’s difficult to imagine a team in on Johnson that won’t at least inquire about Fuller.
Fuller, Johnson, and Malcolm Butler are currently at the top of the cornerback market. But only Fuller has a tag attached to his free agency, which could keep him in Chicago one way or another.
