The Chicago Bears could go in any number of different directions with each of their seven picks in the upcoming NFL Draft, which makes them one of the most interesting teams to keep an eye on when draft weekend rolls around in 10 days.
Mock Draft Season is about to hit a fevered pitch and we’ll probably see an uptick in full seven-round mocks, such as this one from Adam Jahns of the Chicago Sun-Times.
It’s a seven-round exercise that fills various Bears needs and provides a complete 32-team rundown of Round 1. You’ll want to clear some time to give it a full read and get a better lay of the land from a big-picture perspective.
As for the Bears, this mock could make you feel some type of way:
Each of these picks fits the Bears M.O. in one way or another. Smith projects to be an anchor in the middle of a defense that could use some stability at inside linebacker. Oliver is an athletic cornerback with good size and the ability to contribute right away as a return specialist as he is eased into the rotation of defensive backs. Nwosu would fit a need as an edge rusher who has also shown some versatility to defend the pass during his time at Southern California. Cappa would be the latest small-school offensive lineman drafted by the Bears, but owns a ton of upside to go along with an NFL build. Jacobs is a late-round linebacker with speed (he ran the 40 in 4.48 seconds) and flexibility (he played inside and out for the Badgers).
The Bears have met with Smith, Oliver, Cobbs, and Trinnaman, so I suppose the familiarity could work in the Bears’ favor.
If the Bears walked away with this haul from draft weekend, it would probably be viewed as a win for GM Ryan Pace, as well as Matt Nagy and the coaching staff who will get their hands on turning these prospects into pros this spring and summer.
Trying to predict each pick in a given draft class is a thankless chore and an absolute crapshoot. However, the way this mock draft plays out is sensible given the Bears’ needs around the gridiron and the types of players chosen for this exercise.
