Remembering How Matt Forte and Devin Hester Were Draft Steals and Other Bears Things

Highlights like these never get old:

  • With the draft coming up on Thursday (I know, finally!), the highlights above serve as a reminder how talent can be found anywhere in a given draft class. In hindsight, I love how apt the Edgerrin James comp turned out to be for Matt Forte. Both running backs were excellent rushers who were superb pass catchers. And because pegging a comp for Devin Hester was difficult, let’s just enjoy some of his college highlights:
  • We can do the same for Matt Forte, too:
  • While there is an additional emphasis on what goes down in the first round, there are six other rounds that follow and good teams find a way to make the most of their picks. You’re up, Ryan Pace.
  • Chris Emma of 670 the Score writes that Notre Dame guard Quenton Nelson wouldn’t be a sexy pick by top-10 standards, but he would be a sensible selection and another investment in Mitch Trubisky’s future. Trying to figure out who is going to the Bears in this draft could be viewed as a fool’s errand because of the multitude of scenarios that could unfold in the first seven picks. But the consensus is that the Bears will have their choice of a top-tier talent, especially if the run on quarterbacks happens as expected.
  • It should be said that the Bears don’t have to take Nelson with the eighth pick, even though he has long been the prospect most point to and connect to Chicago. Bob LeGere of Pro Football Weekly highlights players who could be available on Day 2 and Day 3 of the draft who could fill the Bears’ offensive line needs. Even though UTEP’s Will Hernandez and Georgia’s Isaiah Wynn have their stock rising for now, it’s possible one of those players could slide into the second round. The same can be said for Iowa center James Daniels, who visited the Bears last week.
  • If you’re hoping for the Bears to land the sexy pick, perhaps Virginia Tech linebacker Tremaine Edmunds might be your preferred prospect. Edmunds has freakish athleticism and youth on his side, as well as the potential to be used as an edge rusher in sub packages in addition to a starting inside linebacker. Over at NFL Spin Zone, Dan Schmelzer has the Bears taking Edmunds in a mock draft that is loaded with trades.
  • Earlier in the week, defensive end Akiem Hicks talked about how much better an already good Bears defense can get – especially if Leonard Floyd lives up to the lofty expectations Hicks threw in his direction. Over at the Chicago Sun-Times, Adam Jahns offers up three potential difference-makers who could be drafted by the Bears and put the defense over the top. Iowa cornerback Josh Jackson finds himself on the outside looking in, mostly because he lacks in speed and athleticism when compared to Ohio State’s Denzel Ward. Cornerback is one of the premium positions where the group’s top prospect could fall to the Bears.
  • The draft could offer up some off-the-wall scenarios, but I can’t imagine anything happening that would be as weird as what the Sporting News unearthed among the strangest draft moments in football history. It includes Jay Berwanger (the first Heisman winner and first player taken in the NFL Draft) who was drafted by Philadelphia, traded to Chicago, and ultimately turned down the NFL because it didn’t pay enough. Seriously.
  • An interesting tidbit from Michael David Smith at Pro Football Talk, who notes that Sam Darnold could be the sixth No. 1 overall pick to come out of USC. The Trojans are one of three college football programs to have produced five first overall picks and are the only team lined up to make it six with Darnold. I don’t see anyone from Auburn or Notre Dame (who also have five first overall picks in their program’s histories) swooping in and going No. 1. Darnold being the first pick could impact what happens at No. 2 with the New York Giants, who could go with a quarterback with their first pick, pluck the best position player in the draft, or trade out of the pick entirely. They’ll have options no matter what happens.
  • An active NFL player being a minority owner of a NBA team? That’s kinda neat, even if it is Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
  • It’s funny because … wait a minute … that’s not funny at all:
