Trubisky and Goff, Forte’s Future, Payton’s Acknowledgment, Lions Troubles, and Other Bullets

I have a feeling we’re not going to be the only ones high on Mitch Trubisky’s future:

To be clear, Trubisky hasn’t proven anything just yet. But the flashes he showed despite playing while handcuffed in an offense with limited talent allows us to dream big dreams when it comes to his future. Here’s hoping that Trubisky learned a thing or two about a thing or two while living with Goff during the offseason.

Trubisky and rest of the Bears’ draft class from 2017 took some time to reflect on what their experience was last year. I feel like Tarik Cohen’s advice might be the best and most applicable. “[Keep doing] the same thing that you’ve been doing all your life,” Cohen said, via Larry Mayer of the Bears’ official website. “The game hasn’t changed at all. It’s still football and what’s been making you go is the same thing that’s going to make you go when you get in the league.” Feels like that’s advice that can be applied to any walk of life. The University of Georgia will be well-represented at this weekend’s rookie mincamp, with Roquan Smith and Javon Wims – the Bears’ first- and seventh-round draft picks, respectively – expected to show up and put in their first round of work with the Bears. In fact, fellow Georgia product Kevin Butler – one of the top scorers in Bears history – comes away impressed with the Bulldogs who will soon be turning Bears. Butler even throws a bone and calls Wims a sleeper to keep an eye on because of his size and skill. “We leaned on Javon last year and he responded,” Butler explained while referring to his alma mater’s leading receiver last season. “He was our go-to receiver. He had a great year for us. He’s got the right attitude and the work ethic that’s going to give him a great shot at making the Bears.”

Hey! Let’s tip our caps to Butler, who returned to Georgia to complete his undergraduate degree from the college of business. Way to go, #6.

For those of you who don’t know, Butler set a rookie record with 144 points scored during the Bears’ Super Bowl winning season in 1985 and retired as the team’s all-time leading scorer. In short, Butler was Robbie Gould long before Robbie Gould was a thing.

One day soon, we’ll move completely past Zach Miller getting robbed of a touchdown in Week 7 against the Saints last year. Until then, here is Saints coach Sean Payton acknowledging the missed call:

NBC Sports Chicago is beefing up its Bears coverage by adding a former star running back to its stable. Matt Forte’s transition from the playing field to the broadcast booth begins in earnest as an in-studio analyst on game days. “I am truly excited about this next chapter in my life,” Forte said. “I’ve always envisioned a career in broadcasting, and I couldn’t have asked for a better opportunity than joining the NBC Sports Chicago team.”

In other media news, Chicago Tribune columnist Steve Rosenbloom issued an apology to Roquan Smith that comes on the heels of a controversial column that irresponsibly called into question how Smith acquired a 2018 BMW as a recent former student-athlete. It was part of a Rosenbloom column titled “We could be looking at a new era of new embarrassments from Bears draft picks” that stemmed from Smith losing his team-issued iPad and other personal items. Tough break for the rookie, but I suppose this should serve as a reminder for all of us in the industry to do as much due diligence as possible before jumping to conclusions.

Weird timing: New Orleans Saints running back Mark Ingram was recently suspended four games for violating the league’s PED policy, but NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reports Ingram wants a new contract. Odd time to be asking for a raise, but here is the latest from the Saints’ situation:

Day 3 tight end Tyler Conklin was among the standouts during the Minnesota Vikings’ recent rookie minicamp, writes Eric Smith of Vikings.com. “Conklin made his presence felt in both 1-on-1 and team drills as he caught everything that came his way,” Smith wrote. “The former University of Central Michigan standout showed good hang time with a leaping grab while matched up against a linebacker, and also showed speed on a crossing route. He also hauled in a pass near the sideline and later corralled a pass in traffic during team drills.” Not that the Vikings need any more weapons for new quarterback Kirk Cousins, but the 6-3, 254-pound tight end could grow into a large target along side Stefon Diggs and Adam Thielen. Hope Bears defensive backs are ready.

The Detroit Lions organization finds itself at the crux of some unflattering news. On Wednesday, Robert Snell of the Detroit News shared a report regarding Matt Patricia being indicted for sexual assault in 1996. Patricia was never tried and the case was dismissed in 1997 because the alleged victim expressed the feeling that she did not “feel she can face the pressures or stress of a trial.” Over at Pro Football Talk, Mike Florio shares the statements made by the Lions and Patricia in the wake of Wednesday’s news. And on Wednesday, Patricia reiterated his innocence regarding the matter.

Unrelated to the Patricia story, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports two former Lions employees have filed a an age and racial discrimination suit.
