Mitch Trubisky took a measured and mature approach when discussing the departure of LeBron James, who is leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers – Trubisky’s childhood basketball rooting interest – for the second time in eight years.
Rich Campbell of the Chicago Tribune has some expanded thoughts from Trubisky, whose additional comments gave me a reason to pause and do a double-take: “It’s a lot different now that I am a pro athlete. You understand there’s a lot of things that go on behind the scenes and things you’ve got to think about – your family, yourself and what’s best for your future moving forward,” Trubisky said, via the Chicago Tribune. “So I’ve gained a new perspective on what other athletes in other sports – and in our sport as well – have to think about and consider when deciding on their careers.”
Trubisky sounds like a seasoned vet discussing this particular topic and not someone going into his second year as a pro. I suppose we could chalk this up to being another example of Trubisky’s growth and maturity as he goes about making the much talked about second-year leap. Still, having this type of thought exercise at this stage of his career has me wanting to file this away for future reference in case the time comes when we need to re-visit this.
Because Trubisky still has three years left on his rookie deal, plus a fifth-year option, and possibly two more years under the franchise tag if it comes down to it, we’re looking at another six years before the Bears’ quarterback dabbles in free agency. With that serving as some perspective, it’s not like Trubisky, the Bears, or even yours truly needs to be that well-versed in those waters of free agency just yet.
