There was a peculiar buzz around the NFL’s Supplemental Draft this season, so much so that there was a belief that the Chicago Bears could be active and targeting one of the talented defensive backs who suddenly became available through this process.
In the end, the Bears did not participate in the supplemental draft. However, two teams did:
So Giants take Sam Beal in round 3 of supplemental draft and Redskins draft Virginia Tech CB Adonis Alexander in 6th round. CB help for NFC East.

The teams who picked Western Michigan’s Sam Beal and Virginia Tech’s Adonis Alexander will lose their corresponding round picks in the 2019 NFL Draft. That means the Giants will not have their third-round pick, while Washington will be sans a sixth-round selection.
Beal was viewed as the most prized prospect in this draft pool and the most talented football player to become available in the supplemental draft since Josh Gordon. Beal was so intriguing as a prospect, the Bears (as well as the league’s other 31 teams) were in attendance for his Pro Day workout that took place in late June. Beal joins the New York Giants, a team short on star secondary members … and one that will face the Bears later this season.
The New York Jets (another Bears opponent) plucked Mississippi State safety Brandon Bryant after the supplemental draft, according to NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero. Bryant figured to be in the mix to be drafted in the seven-round supplemental draft, but each of the league’s 32 teams passed on the opportunity to do so when given a chance. And because the Jets waited it out, they won’t have to forfeit a pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. Good thinking on the Jets part, because that pick probably going to be at the higher end of the round.
Oregon State linebacker Bright Ugwoegbu and Grand Valley State running back Martayveus Carter – two players who were eligible for the supplemental draft but went undrafted – are now undrafted free agents who can be signed by any team. The Bears attended Ugwoegbu’s Pro Day, so he might be someone whose name we’ll need to keep an eye on to see where he lands.
