Progress can be a slow process. So even as we ride the waves of optimism from this offseason into training camp, the fact remains that Mitch Trubisky still has some growing up to do.
But this doesn’t seem to come as a surprise to Chicago Bears Head Coach Matt Nagy, who knows that overnight success isn’t a thing that is going to happen here: “It’s going to take time. We’re building it. You have to temper that a little bit,” Nagy said, via the Chicago Tribune. “You can’t expect to come out and it just take off right away. That is a part of this process. But as long as you stay patient with it and don’t get frustrated, you’ll be all right.”
The players understand that and so do the coaches, so we might as well let it sink in, too.
There were times where Trubisky looked inconsistent during camp practices on Saturday and Sunday. Then again, part of that can be attributed to Trubisky throwing some wet balls around the practice field through the rain drops. But even when things were dry (or as dry as they’d get), Trubisky wasn’t completely sharp or consistent with his throws. And while he looked more confident with himself and his abilities than he did at this time last year, you can tell he is still getting a grasp on things in his new offense.
Even then, he still found a way to uncork some impressive throws:

When it comes to training camp, you take the good with the bad. That’s why we liked the idea of the Bears practicing in the rain. A team that is going to play in adverse conditions at some point (if not several points) during the season might as well get used to playing through crud weather while the stakes aren’t high. Sure, we didn’t like getting soaked … but we’ll remember to bring an umbrella next time.
