The Raiders Reportedly Want Two First-Round Picks for Khalil Mack

Chicago Bears

Actions speak louder than words. But the most recent word is that the Raiders have not ruled out the idea of trading stud pass-rusher Khalil Mack. Of course, based on the team’s actions, it’s fair to wonder how serious Oakland really is about dealing the 2016 Defensive Player of the Year.

NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero reports the team has fielded “a bunch of calls” and multiple offers from teams interested in acquiring Mack via trade. And yet, nothing has moved the needle, which puts out the vibe that Oakland really isn’t interested in pushing toward an immediate trade.

So what would it take to get a deal done if the reported offers of a first-round pick and another high-round selection or a player in return isn’t enticing enough for the Raiders? Well, Pelissero hears that it will take TWO first-round picks to get the conversation starting. And on top of that, the team acquiring Mack would have to sign him to an extension that would probably make him the league’s highest-paid defensive player. Hey, no one ever said the price of doing business would be cheap.

If the Raiders are standing firm and not budging on their request for two first-round picks as a starting point, a deal probably isn’t getting done any time soon. It’s a high price for a player who hasn’t participated in any training camp practices or games with the season a week from starting. And it’s not as if there are a ton of teams with that type of draft capital in the first place (unfortunately, the one that comes to mind is the Packers (though they just opened the purse for Aaron Rodgers, so who knows)).

As things currently stand, the relationship between the team and player is frigid and the hot stove is lukewarm, at best. It’s an NFL standoff at its finest.
