In a game that featured heroics from Khalil Mack, Akiem Hicks, and Eddie Jackson, among others, it was Cody Parkey taking home the hardware after being named the NFC’s Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance in the Bears’ 25-20 win against the Vikings in Week 12.
Parkey joins linebacker Danny Trevathan (NFC Defensive Player of the Week, Week 2) and quarterback Mitch Trubisky (NFC Offensive Player of the Week, Week 10) as Bears players to win the highest weekly honor handed out by the NFL. And there was much rejoicing in Bears nation!
One week after missing four kicks — all of which hit uprights — against the Lions, Parkey went 3-for-3 on field goals, including a clutch one from 48 yards out late in the fourth quarter. Nailing a pressure kick should bring confidence levels in the kicker to new levels, especially since his big game set off quite a post-game celebration in the Soldier Field locker room.
Parkey’s performance has been panned this year as the kicker struggled early in his Bears career. High profile misses against Detroit and Miami put Parkey in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. Things went so wrong against the Lions, the Bears scrapped Parkey’s practice routine and sent him to get his kicks in at Soldier Field in preparation for Sunday’s game. As it turns out, practice makes perfect isn’t just something your mother told you to keep your hands occupied for an extended period of time. Congrats to Parkey on a well-earned win.
