The Walter Payton Man of the Year award is one of the most distinguished honors, because it recognizes a player’s volunteer and charity work in addition to his on-the-field excellence.
This year, the Chicago Bears’ nominee is tight end Trey Burton, who was greeted with quite the surprise when honored:
Getting the nomination for the Walter Payton Man of the Year is one heck of an honor. But to get the word directly from Jarrett Payton is truly special. What a moment that was!
Burton’s 38 receptions for 448 yards and five touchdowns have been a nice addition to the Bears’ offense, but the catches and scores represent more than that. Back in September, Colleen Kane of the Chicago Tribune reported Burton was donating $1,000 for each reception and $2,500 for each touchdown to the International Justice Mission – the world’s largest anti-slavery organization. To this point, Burton has raised $50,500 with his production. Keep the scores coming, Trey!
