The Broncos HC Decision Is Expected Soon and Vic Fangio is Emerging as the Favorite

Chicago Bears Rumors, NFL News and Rumors

OK, now I’m worried:

Bears Defensive Coordinator Vic Fangio and Steelers Offensive Line Coach Mike Munchak emerged as the two finalists for the Broncos’ head-coaching gig and NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport tweets a decision is expected to come down soon. This vibes with a Tuesday night tweet from 9News.com’s Mike Klis, who reports Broncos President/GM John Elway was “deliberating and reviewing” the finalists for the position and expected a choice to be made within “the next day or so.”

We knew Fangio had made it deep into the running, and now we know a time frame. But while we don’t know yet who’s getting the call, things are starting to point in Fangio’s favor.

In addition to being well-positioned (he’s a finalist, doesn’t get more “well-positioned” than that) for the Broncos job, Rapoport says Fangio is “very interested” in the gig. It’s one thing to be considered and interviewed, but it’s another to come away from the process and still be interested. There have been times where interviews go down and a coaching candidate has withdrawn their name for any number of reasons, but that doesn’t seem to be the case here with Fangio. The Broncos appear to be fans of Fangio’s work and he seems like an ideal fit based on the criteria Elway set forth when he discussed what he was looking for in Vance Joseph’s replacement.

So while a decision hasn’t been made, there are hints that Fangio could be the guy who gets the call at the end of the process. That would leave the Bears on the prowl for a new defensive coordinator (and possibly other coaches, as well).

In what is a long-standing tradition in football, the coach poachers come out to play as soon as a team starts winning. Bears Head Coach Matt Nagy says he has a plan in place for if any of his assistants leaves for a promotion elsewhere, and could soon get a chance to back up his words with action. I hope you’re strapped in because we’re about to hit the big finish.
