Less than a week after double-doinking what would have been a game-winning field goal against the Philadelphia Eagles in the Wild-Card round of the NFL playoffs, the Chicago Bears place kicker is scheduled to join NBC’s TODAY show for an exclusive interview. To be honest, I’m not sure how much Parkey will get out of an appearance on a nationally televised audience, other than (hopefully) a bit of closure.
Indeed, there’s probably some value in getting ahead of the story, with Parkey getting this chapter of his life over and out of the way now. Because while this’ll linger for a while no matter what, perhaps it’ll linger a little less by making this appearance and facing the music, so to speak.
In other words: Let’s rip that band-aid off now and maybe it will be less painful moving forward? I can see it.
I just hope – for his sake – it doesn’t make things worse. I can easily see how one too many excuses (if that’s the way he goes) might rub Bears fans the wrong way. Indeed, it’s entirely possible that instead of closure, this appearance just keeps open an unflattering spotlight on Parkey and the kick. But because he’s is up for it, there has to be some reason beyond the “kicker misses game-winning kick in playoff game” angle that NBC’s TODAY show has in mind. The unknown is always enticing. So with that in mind, I guess I don’t hate this. I’m just a bit confused, as I’m sure you are as well.
