It looks like Ted Monachino’s tenure as the defensive coordinator at Kansas State is ending before it could even officially begin.
ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg reports Monachino is expected to leave Manhattan, Kansas for a position on the Chicago Bears’ defensive coaching staff. Rittenberg doesn’t specify what his role will be within the Bears’ staff, but there are plenty of positions from which to choose. The Bears have openings at Linebackers Coach, Outside Linebackers Coach, Defensive Backs Coach, and Assistant DBs Coach – there’s no shortage of available jobs on Chuck Pagano’s staff.
Monachino’s name made its way onto the rumor mill earlier in the week and his history with the Bears’ new DC made him a likely candidate to join a former colleague. And as fate would have it, there are plenty of positions to choose from, including ones Monachino has plenty of experience in coaching. Monachino worked as Pagano’s DC for the Indianapolis Colts in 2016 and 2017, but also coached linebackers and the defensive line in previous stops in Baltimore and Jacksonville. So if the Bears are looking for an assistant with a lengthy coaching history at the college and pro levels, as well as experience on multiple levels on the defense, then Monachino makes sense.
Even when (if?) Monachino officially joins the staff, there will still be other positions that need to be filled. With that in mind, we’ll continue to monitor the situation and update when news surfaces.
