Another big-legged kicker is on the Chicago Bears’ radar.
Andy Phillips (who kicked for the Bears in the preseason a few years ago) and Tom Hackett team up for the Special Forces Gang podcast, and they made note that the Bears seemed “very interested” in Utah kicker Matt Gay:

Matt backed it up to 61 yards to end the day. Distance not a problem, tailed slightly left on him. This was 1 of his 4 misses from pro day. pic.twitter.com/PiDGBEiaDG

The Bears’ presence at Gay’s Pro Day isn’t a surprise. Not only is the team in search of a replacement for Cody Parkey, Gay fits the mold of what GM Ryan Pace is looking for in a kicker. Pace seeks a place-kicker with a powerful leg whose kicks can knife through the often unforgiving winds at Soldier Field, and Gay possesses one of the strongest legs among the draft’s top kicking prospects.
Gay jumped on our radar ahead of the East-West Shrine Game and was one of three place-kickers invited to the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. This is what we wrote about him at the time:
Gay had a decorated college career in which he was a consensus All-American, first-team All-Pac-12 selection, and Lou Groza Award winner. He has experience booting touchbacks on kickoffs and has a “big, booming leg” that makes him stand out from the rest of the top kicking prospects.
Sounds like a winner, right? “Big, booming leg” will open eyes, but there are some concerns that are attached to Gay. He had three blocks and three misses between 40-49 yards last year and NFL Draft analyst Lance Zierlein made note of Gay’s “awkward, three-step approach” that he believes needs some cleaning up. No kicking prospect is going to be perfect, but we knew that back in March when we highlighted the big names at the Combine. And still, Gay stands out above the bunch.
The idea of the Bears drafting a kicker makes me itchy, especially since the team’s picks are limited in 2019. But to get Gay in camp as a seventh-rounder with some upside might be worth the risk.
