If you were feeling uneasy about what lies ahead for the 2019 Chicago Bears, perhaps Jason La Canfora’s latest set of predictions will put you at ease.
Over at CBS Sports, La Canfora picks the Minnesota Vikings to rebound from last year’s disappointing season and win the NFC North. And when it comes to the wild-card spots, La Canfora has the Los Angeles Rams and Carolina Panthers collecting the NFC’s final playoff spots. Which means he has the Bears missing the playoffs entirely.
Had these predictions come from another source, I would have been concerned. Instead, I feel strangely better about the Bears’ immediate future, if only because La Canfora’s Bears-related projections have been so hilariously wrong in recent years.
Remember when the Bears were making Jimmy Garoppolo an offseason priority? Or when Chicago wasn’t re-signing Kyle Fuller? For what it’s worth La Canfora has had issues getting a grasp on what’s happening in Chicago. Whether it’s his inability to understand GM Ryan Pace’s long-term plan or assess quarterback Mitch Trubisky’s development. But recent history has told us whenever La Canfora goes hard in one direction, it’s a good time to fade and not follow.
To be fair, La Canfora was ahead of the curve on Vic Fangio getting head-coaching interest elsewhere late last season. But even visually impaired squirrels find nuts once in a while.
But still … the Bears are a playoff lock now, right?
La Canfora teased a bigger piece tied to the Bears’ regression that will come next week. Maybe then he’ll have some hard evidence to present to back his case. Until then, there isn’t much of a reason to buy what he is selling.
