Cross Him Off the List: Matt Bryant Returns to Falcons

Chicago Bears

One NFL team has solved its kicking problems by reuniting with an old friend who was once kicked to the curb:

Sorry it wasn’t the team (or kicker) you were probably hoping it would be.

The Atlanta Falcons have re-signed kicker Matt Bryant. It’s a move that solidifies one of the team’s holes, and with someone who is solid, reliable, and trustworthy.

Bryant is the Falcons’ all-time leading scorer, and has nailed 88.7 percent of his kicks during his 10-year career in Atlanta. But there was a time where a reunion didn’t look plausible. Bryant was was let go before the start of the offseason in a move that cleared cap space and positioned the team to possibly target a younger kicker. And while they tried to get younger, the Falcons didn’t get better. Hence, the team went back to the well with someone they know well. Good for them. I love it when a breakup story has a happy ending.

At the time of Bryant’s winter-time release, we thought he could be a fit with the Bears. After all, Chicago was on course to find a new kicker and the Bears could have done worse than someone who missed just one kick in 2018. But Chicago seems to be set with Eddy Piñeiro, though things could change between now and the season-opener.
