Creating an Unconventional Protection Plan, Orange Alert, Prince’s Thriftiness, and Other Bears Bullets

The surest signs of fall sprung up over the weekend.

An increase in people wearing orange? Check. Trick-or-treaters getting a head-start on things? Yep. Flooded streets b because the city hasn’t cleared leaves from gutters? Sigh. That last one is my least favorite.

  • This is some A-grade thrifting by the Bears in their challenge to put together a top-notch Halloween costume:
  • We’ve got about three hours of football that will surely keep us on the edge of our seats. So it would have been irresponsible of me not to open with the video above. Breathe in, breathe out, relax, and let the game come to you. Got it? Good. Now, to relay that message to the players. …
  • Can you believe today is the first traditional noon start for the Bears this year? It’s wild if you really think about tit.
  • Of all the things the Bears can do to move above .500 with a win today against the Chargers, taking something the Saints did so well against them last week. New Orleans used reserve lineman Will Clapp on 18 offensive snaps (23%), but didn’t use him in a predictable way. There were times in which Clapp was involved in run-blocking. And there were times in which he was used to help aid the passing game. But in all cases, Clapp’s presence allowed the Saints to send extra blockers at Khalil Mack. I’m not quite sure how the Bears can best counter this move, but it’s something they should be aware of going into this game.
  • Chicago’s last two opponents have eliminated the Mack factor. And yes, not having Akiem Hicks snagging attention elsewhere on the defense has hurt the Bears in their back-to-back losses. But when Mack is getting extra blockers against him, it means someone is getting one-on-one coverage somewhere else. That means Leonard Floyd, Bilal Nichols, Eddie Goldman, Roquan Smith, or any number of guys needs to step up and cause havoc. Opportunities are there to be made.
  • Danny Trevathan is due for a breakout game:
  • Trevathan is on pace for a 147-tackle year, which would represent a single-season best for him since joining the Bears in 2016. It would also be the second most for him since 2013, a season in which he racked up 152 tackles in his second year as a pro while with Denver. Trevathan’s signing was a turning point for the Bears’ rebuild, as his presence in the lineup brought stability to the middle of the defense, while his winning spirit as a Super Bowl champion began to infiltrate the locker room upon his arrival. If the Bears can follow Trevathan’s lead, they will be in good hands today (and probably the rest of the year).

  • It’s an orange alert at Soldier Field:

  • Something to watch for on the other sideline:
  • Of all the things that could happen today, don’t let today’s game against the Chargers end with the Bears being on the wrong side of a play like this:
  • Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts did some amazing stuff in a loss at Kansas State:
