Happy Deadline Day, Thinking Through Possible Bears Trades, and Other Bears Bullets

The deadline is at 3 p.m. CT. Do you know where your trade pieces are?

  • The general feeling entering today is that it will be a surprise if the Bears make a trade before the deadline. It doesn’t mean they can’t or won’t, but the vibe is that the Bears will boogie with the dates they brought to the dance. But … what if a move was made? It’s not as if the Bears are short on talent that could be made available. Let’s explore some possibilities.
  • Edge defender Leonard Floyd could conceivably be on the block. Teams are always looking for pass-rush help, and Floyd has the rest of this year and next year (because the Bears picked up the fifth-year option on his rookie deal) under team control. Floyd has flashed here and there, but hasn’t lived up to the billing of being a top-10 pick. Last year, the Rams acquired Dante Fowler (and a fifth-round pick) from the Jaguars by sending a third-rounder to Jacksonville. Fowler and Floyd are similar in that neither lived up to the hype or prospect pedigree, but were still solid players. No one ever wants to trade a player they invested so much in, but the Bears could clear more than $13 million in cap room in 2020 (in addition to snagging a precious mid-round pick).
  • It feels like a seller’s market for receivers, especially after Mohamed Sanu went from Atlanta to New England for a second-round pick. Considering there are two years left on his deal and some players on the back of the depth chart who could step up in a pinch, receiver Taylor Gabriel could be someone who interests a team. On David Kaplan’s ESPN radio show, he and Adam Schefter were shooting the poop regarding who could be dealt in a hypothetical deal. Gabriel came up as someone who would make sense for a team like the 49ers, which would reunite him with Kyle Shanahan. The two didn’t explicitly discuss a Gabriel deal for QB3 C.J. Beathard (whose name has popped up on the rumor mill elsewhere), though that particular hypothetical is worth a chuckle.
  • Speaking of hypotheticals: If 1.5 years of Amari Cooper could net a Cowboys first-round pick for the Raiders, what would 1.5 years of Allen Robinson get the Bears? Would a first-round pick for the team’s best offensive player pique anyone’s interest?
  • Washington sent a fourth-round pick to Green Bay last fall to acquire safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix. Presumably, the Bears could get similar value if they did the same thing a year later. But I don’t like the idea of splitting up that safety tandem just yet and feel as if netting a similar round pick in the 2021 draft if Clinton-Dix signs elsewhere after this season is still a win.
  • Inside linebacker Nick Kwiatkoski and safety Deon Bush are free agents after this season. I doubt they would net anything more than a conditional late-round pick, but teams are always in search of depth. And because of that, I refuse to rule anything out of hand.
  • Kristopher Knox (Bleacher Report) surveys the trade landscape and cooks up deals that would blow up the trade deadline. There are some eye-opening deals Knox offers up, but that Gabriel-Beathard deal popped up again and it misses the mark.
  • Here’s the thing about C.J. Beathard: He has a 1.5 years left on his deal and could conceivably be someone who fights for a gig or even assumes a place-holder role. But after being lapped by undrafted free agent Nick Mullens, his value is at an all-time low. A team that has as few draft picks as the Bears do shouldn’t be trading for a player like Beathard at this stage of his career. It would make sense if the Bears were to trade Gabriel for offensive line help, a tight end upgrade, or as part of a deal for a backup quarterback who could step into a starter’s role without flinch. Beathard isn’t that guy. Full stop.
  • Also, if the three quarterbacks tied to the Ryan Pace era are Mike Glennon, Mitch Trubisky, and C.J. Beathard, it is going to open up a line of questioning regarding the Bears GM and his long-term future in this organization.
  • The Bears had some guys in for tryouts yesterday:
  • Imagine getting fired after beating the Bears:
  • Heck, imagine what would’ve happened to Ken Whisenhunt had they lost.
  • Wait … how did the Bears lose this game again?
  • Khalil Mack is taking the loss hard, telling the Tribune: “I feel like it was on us as a defense. Because we were capable of holding them down. We shouldn’t have let them score 17 points.” OOF. That’s tough. The Bears defense put up a couple of clunkers against the Raiders and Saints, turned around and put together what was mostly a gem of a performance in Week 8 … and still fell short. I get where Mack is coming from, but that one isn’t on you big fella.
  • A silver lining on a dark cloud:
  • It’s encouraging that the Bears’ two highest-graded players from last week’s loss happen to be the guys they took with their first pick in the two most recent drafts.
  • Speaking of David Montgomery, there was some criticism of this play when he had his eyes on the scoreboard:
  • Some folks need to back off. Other than fans looking for something else to be mad about (as if there wasn’t enough after a 3-4 start), I don’t see the issue here. Devin Hester used to do this, and did so when the Bears had smaller video boards than the ones they have now. Players do this quite often, mostly because they don’t have eyes in the back of their helmets that would help them see at which angle is a defender coming to get him.
  • I get we’re all frustrated about the Bears’ performance to this point of the year. But let’s get down to the real issues, rather than dig up things that no one should be mad about.
  • For example, I’m far more annoyed about Matt Nagy’s hypocrisy:
  • But still … I appreciate the message, coach:
  • A nice gesture:
  • Don’t tease me, bro:
  • Some old friends are trying out to land new gigs:
  • A training camp favorite has returned:
