KPL Shines, More Awards for Mack and Patterson, Pats Fans Are Bears Fans, and Other Bears Bullets

I get to see the latest installment of the Star Wars saga later tonight. That’s it. That’s the Bullets intro for today.

  • I get a kick that the one spot on the field where it seems the Bears can do no wrong is inside linebacker. Because it feels like no matter who gets plugged into the hole, they make plays. Danny Trevathan and Roquan Smith are standout players, but Nick Kwiatkoski is a role player who seems to always be in the right place at the right time. Heck, you could go back to Christian Jones during the John Fox era as someone who stepped in and figured it out. Now, we can add Kevin Pierre-Louis to this mix.
  • Tom Thayer’s breakdown of how KPL stepped his game up is worth watching:
  • Depending on what happens with Trevathan and Kwiatkoski in free agency, KPL could be making a case to be kept around in a depth role for 2020. We don’t need to focus on that yet, but just something to keep in mind.
  • One day after earning Pro Bowl invitations, Khalil Mack and Cordarrelle Patterson picked up more honors. USA Today named Mack and Patterson to its All-Decade Team. It has been a decade of domination for Mack, who has five consecutive Pro Bowls, been selected as a first-team All-Pro at two different positions, earned a Defensive Player of the Year award, and has been a dominant force rushing the quarterback since arriving in the league.
  • And then there’s Patterson, whose average of 29.9 yards per kick return is the second best in league history, while his seven kick return touchdowns rank as the third most. Special teamers often get overlooked for their contributions, but Patterson has shed some light on the value of being excellent in the third phase.
  • Here’s to finding something or someone you love as much as Patterson loves ballin’ out on special teams:
  • Here is my list of Pro Bowl “snubs” at skill positions who I think could hang with the team that was selected: Cowboys QB Dak Prescott, Packers RB Aaron Jones, Bears WR Allen Robinson, Broncos WR Courtland Sutton, Lions WR Kenny Golladay, Raiders TE Darren Waller. Do you think my squad could put up some points?
  • This was nearly the most fun thing I’ve ever seen:
  • Small samples are fun:
  • My gut feeling tells me that most Bears fans want their favorite team to win on Sunday. However, I do know that there is a segment of fans that wouldn’t mind the Bears taking a loss that would help cement better draft position in the second round. And then there are the Patriots, who might be the biggest Bears fans of ’em all this weekend:
  • Thank goodness the early forecast isn’t calling for snow (yet):
  • Happy birthday to the Bears’ other special teams ace:

  • The news from Jacksonville surprised me:
  • This is a situation worth keeping tabs on, even if it is outside of the realm of the NFC North. For starters, the Bears play the Jaguars (and the rest of the AFC South) in 2020. But also, change at the top makes me wonder what direction the team goes in moving forward. Are GM Dave Caldwell and Head Coach Doug Marrone on the hot seat? If so, what would that mean for a quarterback situation that did not get solved by signing Nick Foles in free agency. Does movement at the very top put Foles on the trade block? Or does will it position the Jags to keep him around another year to help push and develop Garner Minshew II? Fascinating stuff to watch from afar.
  • In other news … happy anniversary, Coach Coughlin:

  • Poor Vic Fangio:
  • After finally realizing his dream of being an NFL head coach, Fangio’s team received little to no contributions from the team’s most high-profile additions. Between right tackle Ja’Wuan James, cornerback Bryce Callahan, and quarterback Joe Flacco, to say the Broncos didn’t receive much on a return on investment would be an understatement.
  • This is one of the most fun prop bets I’ve seen on a board in a while:

  • Let’s put it this way: If you’re a fan of the Saints and LSU Tigers, and believe *BOTH* teams will win football championships this winter, then a $100 bet on “YES” would pay out $1,100. At minimum, that would be a fun investment.
