Does Matt Nagy Have Enough Quarterback Coaches? And Other Bears Bullets

I got another close up look at my alma mater’s basketball team last night when Southern Illinois played at Loyola. But even in defeat, I like the general direction of the team. My Salukis hung around with Loyola for about 25-30 minutes, but the Ramblers have a bit too much challenge and a coaching edge with the experienced Porter Moser. Should SIU clean up its shot selection (26 3-pointers is far too many), its defense is good enough to hang around and beat some teams it probably shouldn’t at this point of the building process. In any case, Go Dawgs!

  • The Chicago Bears coaching shuffle is complete:
  • Bill Lazor coming in as the offensive coordinator is officially official. As are the other moves that bring in new coaches we have previously discussed, as announced by the Bears last night. Juan Castillo is tasked with coaching the offensive line, Clancy Barone coaches tight ends, and John DeFilippo is coaching the quarterbacks.
  • In addition to bringing in some new eyes to look at some old problems, the Bears announced promotions for Dave Ragone (Pass Game Coordinator), Brian Ginn (Assistant Special Teams Coach), Chris Jackson (Assistant Wide Receivers Coach), and Shane Toub (Defensive Quality Control). Now that the staff has been complete, the time will soon come for this group to work toward a building plan to get their respective position groups in order. But make no mistake about it, no one will have more pressure than quartet of new offensive coaches.
  • There will be no shortage of voices to guide quarterback Mitch Trubisky moving forward. This coaching staff is employing four former quarterbacks coaches with Nagy, Lazor, DeFilippo, and Ragone having that experience on their respective résumés. In total, Chicago has 22 years of quarterback coaching at Trubisky’s disposal. Here’s hoping he puts it to good use. Otherwise, that collection of minds will be focusing on developing another signal caller sooner, rather than later.
  • I know DeFilippo isn’t the OC, but I’m here for this type of tight ends usage:
  • Hashtag: Memories:
  • Draft pick update from The Athletic’s Vic Tafur, who tweets the conditional fifth-round pick the Raiders were sending to the Bears as part of the Khalil Mack trade is now a 7th-rounder going to Chicago.
  • So as things stand, the Bears have the following picks: 43, 50, 146, 177, 181, 204, and 211. They also projected to get a fourth-round compensation pick, but it’ll be a while until that shakes out. Once it does, the Bears will have eight picks. Now, how about using them wisely?
  • Ouch:
  • Dan Bernstein’s alternate universe in which the Bears draft Patrick Mahomes is a fun place to live in (if you can get there).
  • I’m gonna tell my kids this was The Big 3:
