The Bears Scouted Patrick Mahomes “Very Thoroughly” Because Of Course They Did! And Other Bears Bullets

February is here!

That’s not something I would usually be happy about, but January was such a dreary, drag of a month that I am looking forward to what February brings. Here’s hoping I’m not eating my words by the middle of the month.

  • It will be tough watching the Super Bowl without thinking about what could have been with Patrick Mahomes. And reading the latest from WGN Radio’s Adam Hoge isn’t going to help matters. Hoge catches up with Mahomes’ agent Leigh Steinberg, who confirms the Bears’ deep interest in his client. “They were interested and they scouted him very thoroughly,” Steinberg told Hoge. “But individual teams fall in love with individual players and that’s what it takes to get drafted high.” Sigh.
  • If you’ll recall, the Bears took a close look at Mahomes back in April 2017. They met with Mahomes and worked him out during the pre-draft process. Then, shortly before the draft, Steinberg revealed the Bears had a “fair degree of interest” in his client, whose stock rose from receiving a second-round grade from the NFL’s college advisory committee to being a projected top-10 pick. We have since learned that Mahomes ranked second behind Mitch Trubisky on the Bears’ draft board in 2017, but wasn’t the apple of the general manager’s eye like Trubisky was at the time. Hard to not think about what could have been when it is laid out in this manner.
  • For what it’s worth, Steinberg isn’t ready to throw in the towel on Trubisky. “I think you have to give Trubisky a much longer period because what happens is, the more times a quarterback sees the field, the better he gets,” Steinberg said. That’s a thought that is rooted in logic and sensibility. It’s a fair perspective. After all, we have seen what it looks like when a player needs time to develop, doesn’t get it with his original team, then flourishes elsewhere. Just look at Alex Smith and Ryan Tannehill as prime examples.
  • In an ideal world, Trubisky would get a chance to take his lumps, develop, and grow with the franchise. But this is far from an ideal world. The Bears have made significant investments via trades and free agency to open up a competitive window. And to further complicate things, Trubisky is set to enter the final year of his rookie deal, and his future contracts figure to be far more costly than his rookie contract (especially if he can return to his 2018 form). If the quarterback gets paid, it means the team will need to offset that pay raise by fielding a more cost-effective squad at other position groups. In short, this is going to be a delicate balance that will not be easy to come by as we move forward.

  • Over at Pro Football Talk, Andy Reid says he and his team had an idea of where they needed to go to trade up and acquire Mahomes in the first place. Of course he did … he’s Andy Reid!
  • Here is a list of coaches who I believe have a firm and complete grasp of scouting and developing good quarterbacks: Andy Reid, Bill Belichick, Kliff Kingsbury, Kyle Shanahan, Lincoln Riley. I like Doug Pederson and Sean McVay, but they are on a tier below that group. Matt Nagy ist a smidge below that level because he hasn’t reached the head-coaching success like Pederson or McVay. In the end, there are too few true quarterback experts out there in the NFL. And it’s no coincidence that the vibe is that there simply isn’t enough high-end starting quarterbacks in the league.
  • C’mon Bears … EXTEND HIIIIIIIIIIIIM:

  • Larry Mayer of the Bears’ official website ranks the team’s legends who are most deserving of a Hall of Fame nomination. Good timing for this, as the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s 2020 class announcement will take place tonight. Devin Hester is at the top of the list, while offensive lineman Jay Hisgenberg, and defensive lineman Steve McMichael round out the top three. “Mongo” should be in, if only for being the first (last, and probably only) celebrity Seventh-Inning Stretch conductor to be tossed from the booth for threatening to have “speaks” with an umpire.
  • Seriously, that’s a thing that happened:
  • I didn’t think Kyle Long was coming back, but he seemingly squashed any chance of a return:
  • Good for him! Go enjoy a post-football life, #75.
  • An interesting hire for Vic Fangio’s Broncos:
  • TVs, glasses, supplements, and ozone generators(?) are among your Deals of the Day at Amazon today. #ad
