Because of the nature of single-elimination postseason play, we don’t always get the best Super Bowl matchup.
But Super Bowl LIV sets up to be different than other games.
This showdown between the 49ers and Chiefs has the potential to be special. It features two top-5 scoring offenses and two top-10 scoring defenses. But in a surprising twist, San Francisco’s offense out-scored Kansas City’s unit in 2019. That’s right. The 49ers had the NFL’s second-highest scoring offense (479 points, 29.9 points/game), while the Chiefs ranked fifth (451 points, 28.2 points/game). On the other side, Kansas City’s defense was a bit stingier than than San Francisco’s, as the Chiefs defense allowed fewer points (308, 19.3 per game) than the 49ers (310, 19.4 per game).
This Super Bowl features nine players who were first or second team All-Pro in 2019, 10 players who were named to the Pro Bowl, and the NFL’s reigning MVP. Yeah … this should be good.
