Welcome to Super Bowl Sunday! Re-Visit Jimmy G Rumors, Meet the HOFers, Peyton Honors Kobe, and Other Bears Bullets

It’s not too late to make my friend Jim’s awesome short-rib chili or boneless sweet-and-sour wings to win over your Super Bowl party. Kickoff isn’t until 5:30 PM CT, so there is plenty of time for you to prep, cook, fill out your prop sheets, and serve up a delicious meal.

  • Happy Super Bowl Sunday! That’s it. That’s the first Bullet!
  • Are you rooting for the 49ers because they are led by Jimmy Garoppolo? You’re probably not alone. And to think, he could’ve been a Bear, too:
  • Ahhhh, yes. I remember the infancy stages of this site when Jimmy G rumors were hot. If you don’t, then allow me to fill you in. There was a time trading for Garoppolo was reportedly “far and away” the Bears’ top priority. During this period, Chicago was made betting favorites to land the Eastern Illinois/Rolling Meadows High School product in a trade with the Patriots. Reports surfaced that several teams were preparing blockbuster offers, but he wasn’t moved until late October 2017 (and for quite a discount, compared to the Patriots’ rumored early asking price). Wild times, indeed.
  • Trading for Garoppolo would have been a landscape-changing deal. What picks would have gone to New England had the team made a deal before the 2017 NFL Draft? Could the Bears have kept their first-rounder and done something else with it? Maybe draft running back Christian McCaffrey or Leonard Fournette? Perhaps a defensive back such as Marshon Lattimore, Malik Hooker, or Jamal Adams? Would they have been forced to make Garoppolo the highest-paid quarterback? Could they still have traded for Khalil Mack? Or would he have landed in San Francisco, as John Lynch once dreamed? So many things could have different had the Bears pulled off a Garoppolo trade, but I bet the Niners wouldn’t change a thing.

  • An idea: Hire these guys to fix Mitch Trubisky:
  • Remember when the Bears hired a highly touted kicking guru to help their obsessive kicker search? Well, how about hiring the quarterback version of that guy? It’s certainly an idea worth exploring … right?
  • Good luck to Rod Wilson, the ex-Bears linebacker who suffered an awful hamstring  injury days before Super Bowl XLI and was unable to suit up for the big game. Larry Mayer of the Bears’ official site notes that Wilson is back at the big game in Miami as the Chiefs’ Assistant Special Teams Coach. Wilson is coaching with Dave Toub, the long-time gold standard of special teams coaches who set the bar high in Chicago.

  • Calais Campbell won the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award, but let’s take a moment to remember the last Bear to bring it home:
