Give Monty the Dang Ball (Please) and Other Bears Bullets

A simple request before I get on with today’s Bullets: Be nice to people.

Be nice to people online. In person. Over the phone. On Twitter. Facebook, too.

Be considerate of the opinions of others. Be mindful of your thoughts, words, and actions.

I’m the last person who wants to be preachy. In fact, I’ll have to try, myself, to heed my own advice moving forward. It was just on my mind today, so I wanted to pass it along while I had the chance. Who knows … perhaps reading this will help you help someone else have a better day by just not being a jerk. It’s worth a shot.

Onward.

  • GIVE MONTY THE DANG BALL:
  • There is an obvious importance in getting the quarterback position right in 2020 and beyond. HOWEVER, it isn’t the only position on the offense that could use a shakeup. David Montgomery was an elusive back in college who was slippery and tough to tackle. He proved to be that in the pros, too … when he was given the ball. Montgomery’s 47 missed tackles forced on carries was the second most among rookies last season. But Montgomery’s 15.3 carries per game fell short of category leader Josh Jacobs (18.6). Feed Monty, let him cook, allow him to operate in space, and see if he can build on a respectable rookie season.
  • I am impressed that Devin Singletary forced 36 missed tackles to finish third in the category. And that he did it on just 151 rushes in 12 games makes it all the more impressive. The Bears were hot on Singletary throughout the pre-draft process in 2019. He went one pick after Chicago selected Montgomery.

  • Gregg Rosenthal and Chris Wesseling (NFL.com) have six quarterbacks among the top 25 in their ranking of the 101 best free agents in this class. There are five in the top-100, though Teddy Bridgewater (63) and Marcus Mariota (79) are tiers below that first grouping headlined by Dak Prescott (1), Ryan Tannehill (7), Drew Brees (14), Tom Brady (16), Philip Rivers (22), and Jameis Winston (25).
  • Four Bears make the cut on the NFL.com list, with Ha Ha Clinton Dix (52), Nick Kwiatkoski (67), Danny Trevathan (82), and Prince Amukamara (92) rounding out the group.
  • To be clear, the Bears aren’t the only team  participating in the great offseason quarterback race of 2020:
  • Trying to figure out where all the moving quarterback pieces could fit can cause for headaches. Or maybe that’s just me not getting enough sleep at night. In any case, let’s take a moment to talk this through, because Greg Auman is correct in tweeting the challenge here is to figure out the teams that could be in the hunt.
  • And let’s not limit this to teams with younger/unproven picks as presumed starters. Let’s talk big picture. Because in  addition to Chicago, Jacksonville, Washington, and Denver, we can look at Indianapolis, Tampa Bay, Los Angeles’ AFC team, Miami, and Cincinnati as sure-fire teams that could seek QB help We could also throw in teams such as Pittsburgh, Carolina, New Orleans, and Detroit as possibilities to be on the periphery because of older signal callers who are at/approaching the end of their contract terms. And then there’s the wild card that is New England, which could retain Tom Brady and still make a run at a quarterback at some point this offseason. Following the quarterback market is going to be a riot.
  • What a moment for Tarik Cohen and Anthony Miller:

  • Are there still children who aspire to be professional athletes and firefighters? Or was that just my generation?
  • Some of the Combine’s top prospects are molding their games to be like Khalil Mack, writes Larry Mayer of the Bears’ official website. And why not? Mack is the ideal balance of high-end talent and non-stop motor. Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard. But when talent works hard, it looks something like Khalil Mack.
  • There’s always a Bears connection:
  • An old friend gets a promotion:
  • The Bulls may want to take their best shot at landing Sam Presti, but whether they can realistically reel him in is another story. At a minimum, a takeaway here is that this team appears willing to go into the deep end and shell out big bucks in order to bring in a franchise-changing executive. If that is the case, then this hot rumor is worth keeping tabs on moving forward:
