The Women of Football, Draft Capital Growing, Hurts Stock Rising, and Other Bears Bullets

The season finale of ABC’s “The Bachelor” would have gone down as a disappointment had it not been for Hannah Ann’s dragging of Peter in front of a national audience. I’m not sure what kind of person this makes me, but I got a certain amount of enjoyment from watching that guy get shredded on a show that was made for happy endings. And with that, you won’t hear anything from me about that show until next year. Whew!

  • This is the stuff of legends:
  • I’m still on a football high after learning the Bears were getting a compensatory selection in the 2020 NFL Draft. And that it’s a pick at the end of the fourth round makes it all the more valuable. The Bears needed the boost, as this team could use as much draft capital as it can get its hands on this offseason. To be sure, having these eight picks (no first rounder, no third rounder) isn’t the ideal scenario for the Bears. But they could certainly make the best of a not perfect scenario. When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. When the compensatory draft pick formula gives you additional draft capital, use it!
  • In a way, this closes the book on the Adrian Amos era. And I hope that this is a teachable moment for GM Ryan Pace and his front office. Your team isn’t going to keep everyone they want. That’s just the nature of a capped professional league. But if you draft well, players who leave after performing well could return the necessary draft capital needed to keep the line moving without missing a beat. Creating a player development machine should be the priority of every front office. Ideally, the drafting and development of Amos into a starter who ultimately signs elsewhere, but nets the return of a better pick than what was used to take him in the first place is something that continues to happen as time moves forward. I mean, how else do you think the Patriots continue to rack up picks on an annual basis?
  • The OverTheCap.com draft page has been updated in order to reflect the release of 2020 NFL Draft compensatory picks. It’s a good resource for the draft nerds among us.
  • And now, a Chicago Bears draft pick update (via Tankathon.com):
  • I have an idea of how the Bears could use one of those picks::
  • Don’t overthink this, Bears. It’s right there for ya …
  • Jalen Hurts might be my favorite *attainable* draft-eligible quarterback. He has a winning pedigree, a unique prospect profile as someone who was successful at two blue-blood college football programs, and has quite the buzz going for him right now. This isn’t to say he isn’t without flaws, but there isn’t a quarterback in this class (or any class for that matter) that is flawless. Even Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson had things that the best draft insiders were hung up about at the time. People forget that.
  • Which takes my mind to two places: (1) in order to get the quarterback position right, your team has to take shots at it and (2) unlike the past when Pace rolled the dice on projected upside based on little more than measurements and athleticism, there is a growing trend of successful, young quarterbacks with extensive college experience. As the college and pro games blend concepts, the transition to the pros hasn’t been as rocky for some of college football’s standout guys. Perhaps there is something to success in real game action that crosses over. It’s not linear development, to be sure. But it’s something I have my eyes on.
  • The highlight of this Dan Wiederer column at the Tribune is at the top, with the re-telling of a back-and-forth he had with an NFL coach regarding the Bears’ quarterback situation:
  • Was that a sobering read? Yes. Was it necessary? Also, yes. Good luck, Bears. You’re gonna need it.
  • Always good to hear smart people on the radio:
  • If you get a chance to find the audio of Brad’s appearance with 670 The Score’s Julie DiCaro, give it a spin. There’s plenty of good stuff on the CBA and the Bears’ quarterbacking future. Though, the most interesting nugget came with the possibility of the Bears rescinding the fifth-year option on Leonard Floyd’s deal. It’s a move that could create $13.222 million in cap space, but also could position the Bears in better standing in the compensatory draft pick formula. How that system would work with a new CBA isn’t quite known to me yet, but the idea of clearing up cap space and being in a spot to generate a future pick in 2021 in the process isn’t the worst idea. Previously, I didn’t think that was possible, but the loophole exists.
