Brian Urlacher accomplished a great many things during his football career.

He was an eight-time Pro Bowler and four-time first-team All-Pro selection. He won the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award in 2000 and was named the league’s Defensive Player of the Year five years later. And after he retired, Urlacher earned a spot on the Top-100 list of all-time Bears and was enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

But the one thing he’s never done? Own a Major League Baseball team (slacker).

ESPN’s Vaughn McClure reports Urlacher is one of the handful of prominent sports figures set to join a group headlined by Alex Rodriguez and Jennifer Lopez that is trying to purchase the New York Mets – others in the group include Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, Wizards star Bradley Beal, and retired Browns offensive lineman Joe Thomas.

“Being a former athlete and having a chance to be part of a group trying to purchase a professional team, it’s pretty cool,” Urlacher told ESPN. “It’s especially cool to be involved with Alex. Alex is the man.”

Rodriguez spent 12 years of his star-studded baseball career with the Yankees, finishing his career with 696 home runs, a career .295 average, 14 All-Star appearances, three MVP awards, and an estimated $441,285,104 in salary according to Baseball-Reference’s findings. He has teamed with his fiancée, Jennifer Lopez, who is a star of stars in her own right and someone who FOX Business estimates has a net worth between $225 million and $400 million to go along with an annual salary of $40 million. This power couple reportedly has put in $300 million of their own money as part of an initial bid of $1.7 billion.

Spotrac estimates Urlacher’s career earnings as a Bears star linebacker was a bit more than $80.1 million. Every little bit helps when trying to buy a baseball team, I suppose. Now that Urlacher is in on the action, we’ll keep a closer eye on what’s happening with the Mets’ ownership situation.
