Mike Zimmer was set to enter the 2020 season as a lame-duck coach on the final year of his contract.
It doesn’t look like that will be the case for much longer.
News from NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero:
The #Vikings are finalizing a multi-year contract extension with coach Mike Zimmer, per sources.

Sources informed Pelissero that the Minnesota Vikings are nearing an extension agreement for Head Coach Mike Zimmer.
Zimmer, 64, is going into his seventh year with Minnesota and is the longest-tenured head coach in the NFC North. He has a 57-38-1 record in 96 regular-season games with the team since joining in 2014. The defensive-minded coach has made the most of his head-coaching opportunity after spending years as the Bengals defensive coordinator. Zimmer has led the Vikings to the postseason in three of the last five years, and even has a pair of playoff wins to show for his efforts. Although, Zimmer’s Vikings are 0-4 against the Bears since Matt Nagy arrived.
The multi-year extension comes more than a year after the two sides hammered out an option after his deal was set to expire at the end of the 2019 season. Length of the deal has yet to be determined, but it sounds like Zimmer will get more job security this time around.
We’ll have more when the deal becomes officially official.
