The great kicking competition of 2020 didn’t even last through mid-August.
Eddy Piñeiro stands alone:
#Bears roster move:
We have waived K Ramiz Ahmed— Chicago Bears (@BearsPR) August 11, 2020
The Bears waived place-kicker Ramiz Ahmed, who signed in April and loomed as competition for the incumbent Piñeiro. Ahmed was always a long-shot to win, but there’s nothing wrong with healthy camp competition. Heck, maybe the Ahmed signing inspired Piñerio to bulk up this offseason. Nevertheless, there is only one kicker in Bears camp — and it’s Piñeiro.
Waiving Ahmed opens up a spot on the Bears’ 80-player roster. That’s certainly convenient. Earlier, reports surfaced that the team is set to sign defensive back Marqui Christian. Although, the team itself hasn’t made that signing official just yet. Waiving Ahmed would clear a spot for Christian and keep the Bears roster at 80. That’s not un-important, as teams with more than 80 rosters have to split their practices to adhere by the league’s operating rules during a pandemic.
