It took weeks and weeks of underperformance and outside cajoling, but finally, Bears Head Coach Matt Nagy has fired himself from playcalling.
On Monday night, it’ll be offensive coordinator Bill Lazor calling the plays, as announced by Nagy today.
Nagy: "This will give me an opportunity to step back and see things from a different position." https://t.co/4pA8Uyx4hH

Nagy: "I'd be lying if I said this was easy. It's not easy. It's one of my favorite parts of coaching. I love calling plays."

It’s felt for a while like this was picking up steam, even as Matt Nagy appeared to resist the idea. Whether Lazor suddenly makes a huge difference or not, here’s the reality: the Bears (and Nagy) absolutely had to do this right now before the season completely slips away. Maybe it makes no difference, given the personnel and the injuries, but you need to KNOW whether Nagy as the play-caller is the problem. That will, at a minimum, give you additional information for assessment after the season.
And who knows? Maybe it provides an unexpected spark to an offense that has gone from troubled to bad to brutal.
More coming soon.
