The Chicago Bears had two weeks to prepare for this game.
Two weeks to game plan against that Packers defense. That’s ample time to get Mitchell Trubisky up to speed. Enough time to get pass-catchers at their best. Sufficient practice reps to get a defense geared up to stop one of the all-time great quarterbacks. And yet, it wasn’t enough.
Green Bay defeated Chicago by a 41-25 score. It never felt that close.
Aaron Rodgers toyed with the Bears’ defense. Chicago’s offense couldn’t get out of its own way. And in the end, Virginia McCaskey was in attendance for another low-point in what should be the most competitive rivalry in professional football. Instead, it’s another footnote that serves as a reminder of how far the Bears need to come just to be on a level playing field with the Packers.
I can’t stress enough how this game was an embarrassment. To put up a stinker against a rival, coming from a bye, with a chance to pull within a game of the division is unacceptable. And you thought losing to the Vikings was bad news for folks roaming Halas Hall, imagine what losing big to the Packers means. Because at some point, something has to give. Right?
The Bears were clowned on the field as the Packers ran circles around them. And on the broadcast, where references to passing on Deshaun Watson and Patrick Mahomes landed like daggers to your gut. Even Tony Dungy’s pity party hurt to listen to in the game’s waning moments. There’s only so many punches a fan base can take. So I imagine there’s only so much this franchise’s decision makers can take, too.
We’ll have more for you tomorrow. In the meantime, rest up. You’ve earned that much.
