According to court documents obtained by TMZ Sports, Chicago Bears defensive end Mario Edwards has been charged with assault in North Carolina, stemming from an incident on October 17 with a woman who says she was dating Edwards at the time. The Bears were in Charlotte that weekend to play the Panthers.
Per the report, Edwards allegedly physically assaulted the woman in a hotel, grabbing her arm, smacking her, and dragging her out of the room. Edwards’ agent spoke to TMZ and denied that there was a physical altercation, claiming Edwards tried to walk away and deescalate. TMZ cites a police report from the night in question that lists Edwards as a victim, but again, charges have been field against Edwards for the assault. More details will likely emerge on what happened. You can read what’s available in the TMZ report.
The Bears signed Edwards, 26, this past offseason. He’s appeared in all but one game this year, recording 14 combined tackles and 4 sacks.
For now, I have to leave it there. The Bears will presumably conduct an investigation of their own, and the process will play out from their end in tandem with the legal process in North Carolina. We’ll update when there’s more.
