After failing to hit big at the top of free agency, the Bears appear to be pivoting in a direction in which they don’t fall into the same mistakes they did last offseason by making some quality depth signings.
The latest being an unsung Super Bowl hero.
NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reports the Bears are signing free agent running back Damien Williams to a one-year contract. Rapoport cites Williams’ familiarity with Matt Nagy’s offense, having played in what is its purest form under Andy Reid in Kansas City. But he also notes Williams crossed paths with Bill Lazor while in Miami. Seeing that the Bears offense figures to look more like Lazor’s than Nagy’s, this signing seems to be a solid one.
Williams, 28, opted out of the 2020 season, but is coming off a 2019 campaign in which he gained 498 yards on 111 carries for the Chiefs. Ultimately, Williams will be most likely remembered for this:

A Super Bowl clinching touchdown run is epic on its on terms. But having an iconic call from Mitch Holthus really ties it all together.
If Williams has a moment like that with the Bears, we will also have our own fond memories of this signing. But for now, I’m pleased with Chicago adding depth at a position that needs it.
