The Bears Sent Juan Castillo to Get a Close-Up Look at Virginia Tech OT Christian Darrisaw

Chicago Bears

Friday’s trade action is starting to put things into perspective for me when it comes to how the Bears can properly attack the 2021 NFL Draft. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like a dream quarterback falling into the 20s is in the cards. HOWEVER, building out the offense elsewhere is a distinct possibility.

Should the Bears use the Draft to re-tool their offense, it should begin in the trenches. And it could very well start with a top tier left tackle prospect:

Windy City Gridiron’s Jacob Infante confirms that Virginia Tech offensive tackle Christian Darrisaw met with the Bears. More specifically, Darrisaw met with Offensive Line Coach Juan Castillo, who was one of the three representatives Chicago sent to Virginia Tech’s Pro Day. That’s pretty neat.

It’s notable that Castillo was able to get an eyes-on look at Darrisaw. Just as it was when he did the same for Northwestern tackle prospect Rashawn Slater. This isn’t to say the Bears will definitely pick either, but it’s worth keeping in mind as we try to get a grasp on what the team could do on draft weekend. Giving Castillo a look at possible fits at positions of need is a plus. And at minimum, it’s an encouraging trend to see the Bears possibly trending toward using the Draft to fix the offense.

As for Darriasw, the Bears’ interest in him should be serious. The Virginia Tech product was Mel Kiper Jr.’s 18th ranked overall prospect and second-highest-ranked offensive tackle when he declared for the NFL Draft in December. Darrisaw was a three-year starter for the Hokies. Starting every game in the 2019 and 2020 seasons is impressive. But that he took his spot at left tackle as a freshman in 2018 opens my eyes. Darrisaw earned first-team All-ACC honors as a junior, plus All-American recognition from Pro Football Focus. In short, Darrisaw is one of the most accomplished tackle projects this draft has to offer.

Darrisaw figures to be a Week 1 starter. And with current projections slotting in a place where the Bears can take him, consider him on our radar.
