Justin Fields, the Ohio State quarterback who projects to be a sure-fire first-round pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, has disclosed he is managing epilepsy.
This feels like a big deal. But as Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero point out in their reporting, Fields has been (1) playing through it in college, (2) taking his prescribed medicine, and (3) been open in discussing the medical issue with teams. Moreover, there is a feeling that Fields could ultimately outgrow the issue, citing family members who have done the same:
Justin Fields has been taking his medication, and has not had any recent issues. It’s possible he may have already outgrown the illness. https://t.co/Zcp4MqcG08

Fields, 22, is one of this draft class’ highest-ranking quarterback prospects. He is QB3 on our composite ranking, and a potential Bears target — especially if they can trade into the No. 4 spot. Head Coach Matt Nagy’s presence at Fields’ second Pro Day offers further hints at Chicago’s possible interest. Additionally, it gives us further reason to take an interest in reports regarding Fields’ pre-draft medicals.
For what it’s worth, I don’t think this news will drop Fields’ draft stock. Pelissero report Hall of Fame offensive lineman Alan Faneca was medicated while playing through epilepsy. And after Samari Rolle had seizures while with the Ravens, medication helped put him back into action. With that in mind, it’s good that Fields is addressing the issue early, knows his family’s history with it, and plans to continue managing through it. Whether he lands on the Bears or not, I hope he continues to take care of himself. Your health ain’t nothing to mess with.
