The latest round of Bears roster churning is here, and it features a swap of offensive linemen.
Adam Redmond is signing with the Chicago Bears, the team announced on Wednesday. And to make room for him on the roster, Chicago is waiving undrafted rookie free agent signing Gage Cervenka. Swapping out offensive linemen might not move the needle, but from a depth perspective, it raises my eyebrow.
Redmond — who turns 28 today! — has played 18 games over three NFL seasons with the Colts (2017) and Cowboys (2018, 2020). He has no starts under his belt, but experiencing some NFL snaps under your belt isn’t inconsequential. Neither is Redmond’s positional flexibility. The Harvard product has spent time at guard and center. And going back to his time with the Crimson, the Ivy League product even has clocked in work as a long-snapper. Want to make an NFL roster as a fringe player? Show some capability as a special teams contributor and you’ll catch someone’s eye.
As the build up to training camp rolls on, let’s keep an eye on these types of signings moving forward. Don’t expect a splash move, but there’s nothing wrong with adding to depth.
