The growing list of injured offensive linemen is beyond ridiculous at this point. And, sure, it’s still early August. Chicago’s football team doesn’t play a regular-season game for another 36 days. But I can’t shake how worried this group makes me right now. Things can get better, sure. However, the early concern is less than ideal.
And considering the increasing pile of offensive tackles dealing with injury issues, the Bears might want to expand their horizons.
Here is a list of available offensive linemen, via Spotrac:
• Ricky Wagner, 32
• Mitchell Schwartz, 32
• Russell Okung, 33
• Demar Dotson, 36
• Jason Peters, 39
As of this publishing, those players all remain free agents. And so long as the Bears continue to have injury issues on the line, we’ll continue to keep the names on the list at top of mind.
For what it’s worth, the Bears aren’t totally standing pat. Brad Biggs (Tribune) tweets the team is angling to sign Clemson offensive lineman Gage Cervenka to the training camp roster. Cervenka went undrafted in 2020 and didn’t play anywhere las season. But he was a second-team All-ACC player in 2019 and part of a team that went 29-1 with him as a starting guard. At minimum, it’s a nice depth signing for an offensive line with six players out while dealing with injuries. But, again, the Bears might want to aim higher just in case things don’t clear up for them as soon as they’d like.
