At this time next week, I hope to be writing an anecdote about the Bears having a successful Preseason Week 1. Positive vibes only.
• Jimbo Covert’s Hall of Fame speech was deserving of a gold star, with this anecdote featuring Walter Payton being a most delicious treat:

• If “Good morning, sunshine. Time to kick some ass!” isn’t how you’re trying to wake me up every morning, then I don’t want it.
• What a night for the newly minted Pro Football Hall of Famer:
A special moment in Canton. 🧡

• Offensive linemen are criminally underrepresented when it comes to the Hall of Fame, so it’s good to see someone like Covert get their time in the spotlight. Covert’s credentials are legit. Two-time first-team All-Pro, two-time Pro Bowler, member of the All-Decade Team for the 1980s, and a force to be reckon with on that Super Bowl XX championship team. Covert played 111 games over the span of eight years. The career span isn’t as long as one might expect out of a Hall of Famer. But if you consider the era and the things Covert put his body through as an offensive lineman, it’s easy to come around to him as a HOFer.
• There’s been a ton of love for Edgerrin James’ HOF speech from last night, so I thought I’d share this morning:

• Some good news from Bears camp:
A great morning for Matt Nagy: No new Bears injuries.
— Jason Lieser (@JasonLieser) August 8, 2021
• But on the other hand:
No changes from Saturday in terms of injuries — which means rookie Teven Jenkins remains sidelined with his back issue. #Bears has 21 players out Saturday including guys given vet days.
— Brad Biggs (@BradBiggs) August 8, 2021
• Strap it on, folks. It’s time for a (brief) refresher. Roquan Smith (groin), Teven Jenkins (back), James Daniels (thigh), Germain Ifedi (hip flexor), Tashaun Gipson (groin), Eddie Jackson (hamstring), Josh Woods (quad), Lachavious Simmons (concussion), Larry Borom (concussion), J.P. Holtz (quad), Thomas Ives (glute), and Artie Burns (quad) were OUT. Damiere Byrd (heel), Joel Iyiegbuniwe (hamstring), Michael Joseph (hamstring), Artavis Pierce (hamstring), Robert Quinn (back), Badara Traore (knee), and Desmond Trufant (groin) were practicing with limitations as of Saturday. Meanwhile, Akiem Hicks, Khalil Mack, Jimmy Graham, and Danny Trevathan were given days off for load management. It’s a who’s who of who’s on the sideline at Bears camp.
• The Bears have six offensive linemen on the mend. With that in mind, it makes sense that they made the Gage Cervenka signing officially official on Sunday. It’s just that they should be aiming higher, in my humble opinion.
• Back to the lighter side of things, where you don’t need coffee because you have a 12-second clip of Justin Fields throwing to Allen Robinson II to wake you up on a Sunday morning:

• Some unheralded pass-catchers are making names for themselves at camp:

Rodney Adams is catching more balls than anyone not named Allen Robinson or Darnell Mooney in camp. Just got a deep shot from Andy Dalton in 7-on-7.

• It sounds like the Vikings got some good news regarding Justin Jefferson’s camp injury:

• But on the other hand…
4. Zimmer said today that it's a "nagging" injury, which groin injuries tend to be (stop me if you've heard that before with hamstrings). Seems to be one that is bothering Darrisaw regularly in an on-and-off fashion. "He’s one step forward and two steps back," per Zimmer.

• We’ll keep eyes on the Vikings’ injury situations as updates present themselves.
