The Nick Foles market has gone cold. But perhaps it could be heating up.
D. Orlando Ledbetter (Atlanta Journal-Constitution) reports the Falcons are searching for a new backup QB. Atlanta going on a quarterback hunt comes in the wake of the news of AJ McCarron’s ACL injury, which will knock him out for the rest of the year. McCarron was in line to be Matt Ryan’s backup. And while one might not think much of that role, it’s worth noting Ryan is entering his age 36 season. In other words, it’s worthwhile having a serviceable QB2.
With that in mind, I wonder if the Bears could interest the Falcons in a slightly used Nick Foles. The veteran signal caller is buried on the depth chart between Andy Dalton and Justin Fields. Dalton serves as the bridge starter, with Fields as the quarterback of the future. This leaves Foles on the outside looking in having a thankless gig of trying to throw third stringers onto then roster. It would’ve made sense to deal Foles to the Colts when Carson Wentz went down with an injury. However, it sounds like he will be back in action sooner, rather than later. The same can’t be said for McCarron.
So, who’s to say a late round pick swap won’t do both teams good? After all, Foles has familiarity with Charles London and Dave Ragone, former Bears assistants who took their talents to Atlanta this past offseason. Maybe that familiarity greases the skids and opens some doors in trade talks. Let’s keep that in mind for now…
