Another day has come in which the Chicago Bears injury report has me feeling blergh.
Doubtful is the game-day designation for nose tackle Eddie Goldman. Just days after things were pointing in the right direction with Goldman being limited in practice, he appears to have had a setback with two consecutive days without practicing. During his Friday press conference, Bears Head Coach Matt Nagy called Goldman “a day-to-day” guy. Nagy would later add there is a “slim” possibility Goldman can play. However, based on the framing and the updated injury report, I wouldn’t count on Goldman’s return being in Week 2.
That means rookie seventh-round pick Khyiris Tonga is in line for his second straight start.
The “good” news isn’t even all that great, as it comes with a caveat. Left tackle Jason Peters is questionable to play in Sunday’s game against the Bengals. Peters went down in Week 1 with a quad injury, but didn’t return for the second half. That Peters, 39, was practicing (albeit with limitations) this week is better than the alternative of not practicing. But the “questionable” designation still leaves his playing status in doubt.
If Peters can’t play, then Elijah Wilkinson is in line to start. It is Wilkinson, who the Bears brought in this offseason via free agency to play the swing-tackle role, and not Larry Borom because the rookie fifth-round pick is out with an ankle injury. Borom has not been on the practice field all week, and could be moving to short-term IR to clear a roster spot while he nurses the injury.
In another bit of positive news, pass-rusher Robert Quinn has gone from practicing with limitations to being a full go. The arrow is pointing up for Quinn, who had a half-sack and 2 QB Hits in last week’s game against the Rams. Chicago could use all the defensive help it can get up front with Bengals QB Joe Burrow looming.
