When Bears Special Teams Coordinator (acting head coach?) Chris Tabor told reporters there was another positive COVID test at Halas Hall, I was fearing the worst.
Let’s keep it real. The last thing this team needs is to be more short-handed than it already is heading into Sunday’s game against the 49ers. And because Tabor didn’t specify if it was a player or staffer, it was easy to allow your imagination to run wild with the worst-case scenarios. However, it doesn’t sound like the Bears are adding any new players to the Reserve/COVID-19 list just yet.
Brad Biggs (Tribune) and Adam Hoge (NBC Sports Chicago) are reporting that a Bears staffer tested positive. Not a player, position coach, or coordinator, mind you. But someone else who works at Halas Hall. And while I hope that person isn’t feeling harsh symptoms and is getting better, there is a sense of relief that it isn’t a player. Remember, going into last week’s game, the only position groups at full strength were the quarterbacks, receivers, cornerbacks, and place-kicking trio. So it’s not as if the Bears could continue to afford losing players from their depth chart.
To be clear, the Bears are far from being out of the woods this week. Keep in mind the team is still in “enhanced protocols” in an attempt to stop the spread of a further outbreak at Halas Hall. Also consider that the team put two players on the COVID reserve list on game day last week. So by no means is Chicago’s football team clear sailing right now. With that in mind, we’ll continue monitoring the situation.
