Free Agent Receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster is Reportedly on the Bears’ Radar

Chicago Bears

After seeing a handful of the high-profile names come off the board before free agent could even open its doors to the “legal tampering” period, NFL teams in search of receiver help (including the Bears) were needing to adjust their sights.

And when it comes to the Chicago Bears, one player has already come up as a possible target.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports there the Bears are among the teams expected to show interest in free agent wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster. They aren’t alone. Fowler name-checks the Eagles, Chiefs, and Jaguars as teams who could be in the mix for Smith-Schuster’s services. And a return to the Steelers isn’t out of the question. Nevertheless, connecting the Bears with Smith-Schuster has our attention.

With good reason, too:

Anyone who scores a touchdown in Green Bay and has the audacity to do a Lambeau Leap is all right in my book.

But if that isn’t enough, then Smith-Schuster’s previous production and prospect pedigree might pique your interest.

Smith-Schuster, 25, is coming off an injury shortened 2021 season. And while his 2020 campaign came with 97 catches and a career-best nine touchdowns, it also featured him averaging just 8.6 yards per reception. In the previous three years, Smith-Schuster was averaging 13.7 yards per catch. He did his best work in 2018, a year in which he made the Pro Bowl with 111 catches, 1,426 receiving yards, and seven touchdowns. That he hasn’t been able to replicate that production might bother some, but maybe that can be a seen as a sign that Smith-Schuster could use a change of scenery. The Bears could provide that, while simultaneously hooking up Justin Fields with a proven NFL pass-catcher. PFF projects him as a “physical slot receiver” with sure hands. That alone should put him on the Bears’ radar.

There are some major post-hype sleeper vibes if you dig deeper into Smith-Schuster. And it only makes sense that Chicago’s football team has an interest. Of course, Smith-Schuster should have no shortage of suitors. But that the Bears could be one of them as free agency begins has my full attention.
