With Drew Brees’ Future Up in the Air, He (Jokingly?) Teases Potential Return to Football
When news of Drew Brees’ departure from NBC broke earlier, I had to get my jokes in.
And with the quickness:
Anyone need a QB? https://t.co/2m0uzeVDGK

But what if Brees isn’t joking?
Brees, 43, retired after the 2020 season. Getting eliminated in a home playoff game against the eventual Super Bowl champion Buccaneers sent Brees off riding into the sunset. But after just one year on NBC’s football coverage, Brees’ future appears to be up in the air.
In attempting to clarify his situation, he made it a bit muddier:
Despite speculation from media about my future this fall, I’m currently undecided. I may work for NBC, I may play football again, I may focus on business and philanthropy, I may train for the pickleball tour, senior golf tour, coach my kids or all of the above. I’ll let you know

A Brees return to the NFL would be the latest jaw-dropping news in an offseason full of them. Brees is one of the league’s all-time great quarterbacks. He doesn’t need to come back to pad his already Hall of Fame worthy résumé. But we’ve seen other high-end athletes return for lesser reasons.
And while the Saints seem to be cool rocking with Jameis Winston, perhaps their latest expenditures is nudging Brees toward coming back:
Man..signing @juice_landry and @mathieu_era makes me want to come back and play again!!! Great additions…leaders and players! https://t.co/ARvwQbnPUU

And yet, I can’t fathom a Brees comeback tour. Perhaps he is joshing about that part. Maybe Brees is kidding about a return to football. One last “ha-ha” while his name is in some headlines. But if Tom Brady can retire and un-do his retirement on a whim, why can’t Brees?
Stay tuned.
