It sounded like the Chicago Bears’ offense was off to a rough startback in April.
I didn’t want to sound the alarms too loudly at the time. But I couldn’t ignore it altogether. Even still … we were looking at an offense with a new head coach and play-caller. That perspective is essential to keep in mind. As is the fact that we were seeing an offensive line and group of receivers that hadn’t yet been addressed with draft picks. And we’re still trying to evaluate a second-year quarterback working through schematic and mechanical changes. In short, we knew there would always be highs and lows, peaks and valleys, and turbulence along the way. But whole that day might’ve shown off the lows, it is only fair to share the highs.
New center Lucas Patrick delivers something to be optimistic about when it comes to Justin Fields’ development:
#Bears center Lucas Patrick’s impression of Justin Fields: “Fast…he can get moving pretty quick. He’s a fun guy, likes to have the juice and energy. Live arm, like it keeps getting faster in the air…couldn’t have a better start for a working relationship.” @WGNNews pic.twitter.com/O2QIQKbckM

The center-quarterback relationship is so important. So to hear the scouting report from Patrick makes this feel like a sign of progress. Those two players hitting it off in OTAs gives me positive vibes. Hearing that Fields is exceeding expectations is good stuff, too.
A month ago, things were sounding rough. But getting this praise from Patrick early makes me feel a little better now. At least better than I did about a month ago. So, let’s keep stacking these solid performances at OTAs. Build good traits and habits now, then act on them when the season begins in 117 days.
