While we can point to the many advancements that have come our way since the last time the Bears won a Lombardi trophy, one area that appears to have peaked on Jan. 26, 1986 is Super Bowl fashion.
Let’s be honest here, Mike Ditka’s Super Bowl sweater is peak fashion. It’s been often imitated and never duplicated. Simply put, there is nothing like it. So, if you want it, you can get it. But it will come at what I figure will be a hefty price.
Heritage Auctions has announced that Ditka’s Super Bowl sweater will be on sale during the August 27-28 Summer Platinum Night Sports Auction event. That’s right, one of the most iconic pieces in the history of Chicago sports (and fashion!) can be yours.
In a statement shared by Heritage Auction, Ditka’s son (Mark) and daughter-in-law (Stacy) describe the sweater as “Polished, colorful and bold, it represents a moment in time that is so meaningful not only to our family and Bears fans, but to so many people who were caught up in the spirit of this team. We hope whoever takes home this win will continue to enjoy that great energy.”
With that in mind, maybe Matt Eberflus should buy it. The first-year Bears head coach could use all the luck, positive vibes, and good energy he can get after inheriting a 6-win team. Especially with Roquan Smith’s saga taking another twist. But I’m not certain he can rock the sweatervest look. Only a select few can wear the look well. However, you can’t knock it ’til you try it. And in the case of this particular sweatervest, I mean it in the most literal way.
