Just when you thought you had heard all of the Tom Brady tall tales, another one comes out of nowhere.
This offseason has been a doozy for Brady. From his on-again, off-again retirement, crazy plan to join the Dolphins, and rumors of his absence being linked to an appearance on FOX’s The Masked Singer, there’s been no shortage of odd Brady-adjacent stories.
But UFC President claiming — live on air! — that he put together a deal that was going to bring Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski to the Las Vegas Raiders in 2020 takes the cake:
To summarize: In the offseason in which Brady left the Patriots to sign with the Buccaneers, it was the Raiders that almost stuck the landing. And they didn’t, ultimately, because Jon Gruden squashed the deal at the last minute. And it’s not like the Raiders interest came out of nowhere, as there was reporting that Vegas had interest in bringing Brady aboard.
Wow. What a landscape-changer that would’ve been. Brady’s move to the Bucs won that franchise a title. And put the team in a good position to win a few more in the short term. Could that have been the Raiders’ title? Imagine Gruden going back to Tampa with Raiders garb and winning his second title at Raymond James Stadium. What would’ve happened with Derek Carr? The Bears had a reported interest in trading for Carr that same offseason. A Brady deal certainly could’ve put the wheels in motion on a Carr move, which could’ve given us a Carr-Khalil Mack reunion.
And we can’t forget about this storyline:
STOP! Does this mean that the Raiders were those mothercluckers? Amazing!
So, in addition to being the most decorated and accomplished quarterback in NFL history, Brady is equal parts international man of mystery and the main character in a round of tall tales that would make Paul Bunyan blush. I can’t wait to hear what’s next.
